This month I joined a group of friends in my city to create a Crochet/Knitting group that will work on projects for the community. I know there are many groups online that crochet and ship finished items to places in need but I feel that with being on social media so much it’s nice to get back to meeting people face to face and create something together.

Our first project is to create Octopus dolls for Preemies. There are great patterns online but I created for myself a pattern that is a bit quicker and easier for me to make them faster so I wanted to share it here as a FREE pattern.

It’s recommended that babies wear 100% cotton fabrics so for the yarn use 100% cotton as well. In Hobby lobby there are so many colors with the brand “I Love this Cotton” and you can also use “Sugar & Cream” Yarn which has a lot of colors as well.

We will be using the sliding loop aka magic ring. Check out my tutorial on how to create a magic ring:
http://www.sahrit.com/to-create-magic-ring/

The Octopus is worked in a continuous round.

Begin with sliding loop. Ch 1.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in ring. (pull tail of yarn) (6 sts)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each of next 6 sts. (12 sts)

Rnd 3: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st, rep from * 5 more times. (18 sts)

Rnd 4: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * 5 more times. (24 sts)

Rnd 5: *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, rep from * 5 more times. (30 sts)

Rnd 6 – Rnd 12: 1 sc in each of next 30 sts. (30 sts)

Rnd 13: *1 sc in each of next 3 sts, sc2tog, rep from * 5 more times. (24 sts)

Rnd 14 – Rnd 16: 1 sc in each of next 24 sts.

Rnd 17: *1 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc2tog, rep from * 5 more times. (18 sts)

Rnd 18 – Rnd 20: 1 sc in each of next 18 sts. (18 sts)

Rnd 21: *1 sc in each of next 7 sts, sc2tog, rep from * once more. (16 sts)

Continue with Tentacles without disconnecting

Rnd 22: Working In FL’s only this rnd, *ch 30, 3 sc in 3rd ch from hook, skip next ch, continue with ch 3, skip next ch across all chains, once Tentacle is done, work 1 sc in each of next 2 FL sts, rep from * 7 more times. (8 Tentacles)

Stuff the Octopus with filling.

Rnd 23: Working In BL’s from previous rnd, sc2tog 8 times. (Last 2 sts are hiding under 8th Tentacle) (8 sts)

Fasten off; leaving a long tail of yarn. Finish stuffing.

In the last photo I marked where the 16 BL sts are for decreasing.

With yarn needle weave the tail through remaining stitches, pull tight, secure and weave in ends.

And your Octopus is done!

Let’s see what colors and embellishments you go with! Share and comment 🙂
